ANONYMOUS TESTIMONIAL ABOUT THE IMPACT OF AN IPHONE DONATION
A single mother, Ellen* is fleeing an abusive partner and at risk of eviction. She depends on an iPhone donated by Noviaris for communication with the world around her. She and her daughters also use a donated iPad for web searches and homework assignments.
I was born and raised in San Francisco in a Latino family. I am the single mother of four girls and I work as a community health worker. A year ago I graduated from college and I’m hoping to go to San Francisco State for either social work or psychology.
I didn’t have a phone and because of the donation [of an iPhone] I am less stressed… It has helped me a lot. Because of it I am able to communicate and feel that that I can be contacted if something happens. It was very stressful for me to not know— when I was in the street— about my girls.
I have 4 girls, and picking them up and dropping them off at school is hard. Like if something is wrong how is [the school] going to communicate? How are they going to call me? Today my daughter was sick and I had to pick her up. Her teacher was able to text me and I picked her up. If I didn’t have a phone, I wouldn’t have known.
I use my phone for checking emails. I use it for my calendar, like when I have an appointment. It also helps me for traffic, for muni, to download apps, when the bus comes— for transportation.
There are so may things knocking me down… I just need to get back on my feet.
