KELLY AND HER IPAD
Through a partnership with the Community Technology Network and Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, Noviaris provides to iPads to connect seniors to friends, family, news and essential services. This is the story of Kelly, an iPad recipient.
I’ve had my iPad for four months. I had two months of lessons through Little Brothers. I had an incredibly fabulous tutor. He’s a techie, and a very successful one. And I had absolutely no problems, and I took to the iPad like that. It went incredibly well.
I grew up in Denver, so it’s been a lot of fun using the iPad to check out things in Denver, things like my family home there. First home I ever bought was in Denver and it’s interesting to go back and see what things look like now and how they’ve changed. My family goes back 6 generations in Denver and none of them have ever left. They are still scandalized and shocked that I left. In ’71, I was always very interested in San Francisco and its architecture and I was sick to death of snow! So I decided to move here and I have been in love with this city from day one. I’ve been in this apartment thirty years and I love this neighborhood, everything I do is in this radius circle around me. Anything I want, it’s just so centrally located.
I have Google Chrome on my iPad, Google Maps… News, Facebook, Spotify I love, Amazon, Zillow, I like that a lot. San Francisco Archives. Wikipedia. I read old news on the SF Archives. Actually it’s very interesting because this is my town and I’m involved in it. I’m able to dig up old stories about this city. I love it.
I have the iPad to learn, learn, learn! Knowledge! Power! I never really was interested in college, even though I’m an avid reader and studier. I learn stuff all the time. My whole life I’ve always had a dictionary at my fingertips, because even words I know, you think you know them but it’s interesting to look them up to see what the dictionary says the definition is. With the iPad it’s even better, I don’t have to go to the library as often, though I’m a member of the Mechanics Institute in San Francisco that has a great library that I love. I’ve always just wanted to be able to go on the Internet and check things out and learn stuff. Things I might have to do a little research on at the library, most of it I can do on my iPad. When this opportunity came my way, I just begged Little Brothers to put me at the top of the list! I like learning about everything. Music, art, fashion, a little bit of politics, history, I’m into everything. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. I’ll go, “Oh, let me check on this,” and it should take me ten minutes, then next thing I know I’ve been doing it for three hours!
