DARRYL AT ST. FRANCIS LIVING ROOM USES IPAD
In Fall of 2017, Noviaris donated iPads to St. Francis Living Room as part of a new program to teach seniors about technology. Darryl participated in this program, and upon its conclusion, received an iPad for her personal use. We recently received an update from her letting us know how she’s doing. Note: Her email to us has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity.
Dear Maya Claire,
I have a computer, one of the forty that you so generously donated for needy or challenged seniors. My story needs telling, the whole one… with voice recognition, and more skills perhaps one day… but for now a small picture.
I’m a trained musician, but was hit by a a car…homeless, targeted and severely beaten down by both physical and mental disabilities. I remained a technical dinosaur and technophobe… had never owned a computer, nor had the means to buy one. Family, friends, as well as the music I’d been working on, were all out of my reach. I needed to survive and rebuild my brain as well as heal my injured body. But now, many of my musical loves of a 25 year hiatus I can reunite with…having an iPad has given me hope, motivation, and a big leap forward!
Story: Today, I battled the staff in the lobby of the mad nonprofit where l live with a Fats Domino rewrite. I sang some more Fats as well. The Chinese community rallied behind me. I was able to wow them as I now can learn songs from YouTube.
This is the first email or snail mail in 25 years, practically, that I’ve written…anything else, only a sentence or two, could be counted on one hand. I’ll now have a better chance of rebuilding a life…also in sharing my skills. Besides music, I’m also a determined seeker and healer…teacher, student, designer, social and political engineer, and soon a green revolutionary, with writing needs that could only be met on a computer…once I owned one that was portable.
I wanted to write you. I wanted to encourage you to continue sharing in this way … to create and perhaps exponentially help many. And also, to perhaps help me overcome my connection and writing phobias.
Today, you would have loved the battle of the bands. Nothing brag-able, no, not like the old days, but strong music practice helps me emotionally and physically… I’m getting more powerful. The good tunes came from your program’s help. Thank you so much for the life vest.
Best to you, always,
